The rubber backing keeps it firmly in place and flat. This style of mat also reduces the noise of the Mahjong tiles. It is easily foldable or rolled. Easily cleaned as well. Spot cleaning recommended initially but can be washed on delicate or cold cycle then laid flat to dry. Mat will arrive rolled not folded.
